Innovating in a pinch – Public Sector opportunities

We are just about to publish a research project with Steria on managing innovation in the public sector. Due to the recession, the public sector needs innovation but the UK has tended to focus on service efficiency rather than more radical forms of innovation. Increasingly, the public sector will need to consider how it can work with commercial partners to develop new services that create shared value.

A good example of this is the Met Office Healthy Outlook® programme, where the new service has weather-linked warnings for people with respiratory problems. The Met Office and its commercial partner generate revenues from this service and it has been found to reduce costly hospital admissions. Such cross-organisational innovation (open innovation) is now coming to the public sector.
