“Flipping assumptions!”

Creativity techniques are a dime-a-dozen. Many of them are highly specific to a particular context. However,… …some of the best techniques are simple and really easy to operationalise. One such technique is to flip all the assumptions you have brainstormed about your idea.

So, 1. frame the idea; 2. brainstorm all the assumptions; 3. take the opposite of each assumption; 4. design a way to make the idea work under each ‘flipped’ assumption; 5. review and apply. Easy!

Take the example of ‘setting up a new restaurant’. What do you assume? Need a high street venue – need a menu – need a chef – need tables and chairs – need serving staff, etc? Could you make it work if you flipped all the assumptions? Well, if you flipped some of them and made that work, you’d be on the way to having a Japanese style Sushi bar!

Give this a try – its fun and its an easy way to make your creativity session really productive.
