Can you do it all? Are you more than a “gifted mechanic”?

20 07 2010

A little while ago I spoke to the Technical Director of a global business who make trucks. When I asked him about his role he made a point about how things have changed over time. His hypothesis was basically… that in the “early days” the person responsible for new product development needed to be no more than a “gifted mechanic”! These days, that same role requires a broad range of skills. For example, the ideal recruit into this role might have skills in the area of biofuels, ergonomics, materials, telematics, digital communications, RFID, satellite navigation and GPS,  etc! His point is that this has clearly become an “impossible ask”.

So, if you are recruiting or developing the next innovation leader (Technical Director, VP of R&D, Chief Scientist, Innovation Director) – who are you looking for and how will you know you have found the modern generation of “gifted mechanic”?
